Kore yarimadasinda kuzeyi güneyden ayiran dört km genisliginde 249.4km uzunlugunda siradisi bir mekan olan DMZ bulunur. Temmuz 1953’de iki tarafin askerleri üç yili askin bir süre devam eden vahsi bir savasa girdiler. Savas, gittikçe artan kayba ragmen son bulacak gibi görünmüyordu. Sununda BM hakemlik yapmak için adim atti ve ateskes teklif etti. Sonuç olarak askeri savas alaninda bir anlasmaya çagrilan iki taraf askeri Paju, Gyeonggi-do, ve Goseong, Gangwon-do arasinda sinir çizgisini göstermek amaciyla 1,292 tane nisan dikti ve burada DMZ diye bir “trajedi diyari” olustu.

Bu yer elli yilda nasil degisti? Fotografçi Choi Byungkwan ayni soruyu soruyordu. Iki yildir burayi bir kamerayla köse bucak gezdi ve Kore yarimadasinin hala savasla mesgul oldugunu anladi. DMZ hala özgürce gezilebilecek bir yer degildi ve hala iki taraf askerinin silahi birbirine dogruydu. Yillar önceden kalma mermi kovanlari ve delinmis çelik zirhlar kale görünümlü dikenli tellerin etrafina saçilmisti.

Askeri çatisma olasiligina ragmen, burda üzüntü ve gerilimden daha fazla bir sey vardi. Yarim yüzyildir hiçbir insanin gelip geçmedigi bu yer güzel bir ormani, çiçekleri, kuslari ve özgürce gezinen keçileriyle dogal bir cennete dönüsmüstü. Yazar mekanin güzelligini fotograflar araciligla gösteriyor ve yeniden birlesme gerçeklesse dahi oranin tarihin bir sahnesi olarak korunmasi gerektigini belirtiyor. Gelecek nesiller savasin trajedisini görebilsinler diye içinde pasli mermiler, çelik zirhlar, dikenli teller ve yikilmis siperlerin de bulundugu savas izlerine dokunulmamasi gerektigini düsünüyor.

On the Korean peninsula exist s an extraordinary place: the DMZ, a four km wide, 249.4 km long line that divides the North from theSouth. In July 1953, the soldiers on the two sides waged a fierce war that lasted for over three years. It didn’t seem that the war would ever end, despite the growing casualties. Finally, the UN stepped in to arbitrate, proposing a ceasefire. As a result, the soldiers on the two sides called a truce on the battlefield, and raised 1,292 signs between Paju, Gyeonggi-do (province), and Goseong, Gangwon-do, indicating a mi litary demarcation line. The DMZ, a “land of tragedy,” came to exist.

How has the place changed in 50 years? Choi Byungkwan, the photographer, asked the same question. For two years, he traveled through every nook and cranny of the place with a camera, and found out firsthand that the Korean peninsula is still engaged in a war. The DMZ was still not a place one could visit freely, and the soldiers on both sides still had their rifles pointed at each other. Gun shells and punctured steel helmets from years ago were scattered around the fortress-like barbed wires.

Despite the possibility of military conflict, however, there was more than just sorrow and tension there. With no humans coming and going for half a century, the place had become a paradise of flora and fauna, with a beautiful forest, f lowers, and birds and goats that travel freely. The author presents the beauty of the place through photographs, and states that it should be preserved as a scene of history, even if reunif ication takes place. He suggests that the vestiges of the war, such as the rusted bullets, steel helmets, barbed wires, and the ruined trenches, should remain untouched so that our posterity may learn of the tragedy of war.
