July 8

1951 -- The U.S.-led U.N. Command begins talks with North Korea to end the Korean War, which began with a southward North Korean invasion on June 25, 1950. The negotiations, which dragged on for two more years, came to a close on July 27, 1953, when a ceasefire agreement was signed.


1977 -- The remains of Ahn Ik-tae, composer of South Korea's national anthem, are returned from Spain where he died. Ahn had married a Spanish woman and lived in a small town outside Madrid.


1988 -- South Korea's government decides to refer to China by its official name, the People's Republic of China. The move came ahead of the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China, an ideological ally of North Korea, in 1992.


1994 -- Then North Korean President Kim Il-sung dies of heart failure at age 82, a few weeks before he was to hold what would have been the first-ever inter-Korean summit with South Korea's then president Kim Young-sam.

In 2000, his son, Kim Jong-il, met then South Korean President Kim Dae-jung in a summit that touched off a flurry of reconciliation projects between the two countries.


2009 -- Unidentified cyber hackers renew attacks on seven major South Korean Internet Web sites, including AhnLab Inc., which provides computer virus vaccine and online security services.

1953 - The U.S.-led United Nations Command reopens armistice talks with China-backed North Korea after a long suspension. The talks, which began in 1951, continued on and off until the two sides signed a cease-fire agreement on July 27, 1953, ending the three-year Korean conflict.


1974 - South and North Korea start Red Cross talks aimed at helping reunite millions of separated family members in the two divided states. The negotiations broke down soon afterward because of political and military tension on the Korean Peninsula.


1993 - U.S. President Bill Clinton, on a state visit to South Korea, holds a summit with President Kim Young-sam. They agreed to start discussions to initiate a multilateral security dialogue in Northeast Asia and maintain close consultations to help solve the North Korean nuclear arms issue.


2007 -- Golfer Choi Kyung-ju wins the inaugural PGA National, hosted by Tiger Woods. It was Choi's second title of the season and his sixth career U.S. PGA title.


2008 -- Six-nation talks aimed at denuclearizing North Korea resume after a nine-month lull. The top agenda item is how to verify North Korea's past and current nuclear activity, in line with deal signed in September 2005 calling for the North to disarm in exchange for energy aid and other economic and political benefits.

1866 -- The U.S. commercial ship General Sherman is set alight in a clash with Koreans after it sailed into the Taedong River, which flows through Pyongyang, now the North Korean capital. The ship sought to open trade with Korea, then a "hermit kingdom."


1876 -- Kim Koo, one of the most revered Korean patriots, is born. A key leader of the provisional Korean government in exile in Shanghai, China, during Japanese colonial rule of Korea, Kim played a pivotal role in consolidating the nation after independence from Japan at the end of World War II in 1945. He was assassinated by an ultra-rightist man at his home in Seoul.


1961 -- North Korea and China sign a military alliance treaty in Beijing.


2005 -- The two Koreas hold a 10th round of economic talks in Seoul and agree to conduct a trial run of two cross-border railways and open two adjacent roads in October.


2006 -- The two Koreas hold a 19th round of Cabinet-level talks in the southeastern port city of Busan to discuss a number of issues, including South Korea's rice aid to the North and disputes surrounding North Korea's missile launches in early July that year.


2008 -- A South Korean tourist at North Korea's Mount Geumgang resort is shot dead by a North Korean soldier.
