1926 -- Japan completes construction of the Japanese Governor-General's office inside Gyeongbok Palace in central Seoul. The Japanese colonial headquarters controlled the entire Korean Peninsula until Korea regained its sovereignty in 1945. The building later housed the national museum, but public debate continued over whether it should be demolished. Some called for the building to be removed to clear away memories of the past, while others claimed it stands as a legitimate reminder of Korean history. After years of debate, the building was finally brought down in 1996. 1990 -- A Korean Air passenger plane traversing the Seoul-Paris route passes through the airspace of the former Soviet Union for the first time. 2005 -- Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan pledges South Korea's support for an international effort to reconstruct tsunami-stricken areas in Indian Ocean countries. The official, attending an emergency tsunami-related summit of world leaders in Jakarta, said Seoul's efforts will be focused on rebuilding the infrastructure of those countries hit hardest by the late 2004 earthquake and subsequent tidal wave. 2009 -- Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co., a unit of South Korean conglomerate Lotte Group, says it signed a formal deal to buy a liquor unit of Doosan Corp. for 503 billion won (US$383 million), a deal that helps spur Lotte's beverage business. 1914 -- Ewha Hakdang (Ewha School), the first educational institute for women, establishes Korea's first modern kindergarten. 1946 -- Syngman Rhee, a strong advocate of Korean independence, issues a statement opposing Korea's placement under a five-year U.N. supervised trusteeship following Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea. Rhee became the first president of South Korea in 1948. 1949 -- South Korea and Japan sign a secret pact calling on the latter to return cultural properties looted during Japan's 35-year colonial rule of Korea. 1950 -- The Japanese government announces a decree forcing 620,000 ethnic Koreans living in Japan to register with the government. 2004 -- South Korea welcomes North Korea's offer to freeze its nuclear program. 1932 -- Independence fighter Lee Bong-chang throws a grenade in a failed attempt to assassinate Japanese Emperor Hirohito during a military parade on the outskirts of Tokyo. Born in Seoul in 1900, Lee went to Shanghai at the age of 31, where he became a member of a youth patriot organization operating under the Korean provisional government that was in exile there working to restore Korea's independence from Japan. 1965 -- South Korea announces an initial dispatch of 2,000 non-combatant troops to Vietnam. The troop dispatch was made at the request of the United States. 1974 -- President Park Chung-hee issues a set of emergency decrees aimed at banning discussions about revising the Yushin (revitalizing reforms) Constitution and the installation of an emergency military court. The Yushin Constitution was adopted in a national referendum on Nov. 21, 1972. 1997 -- The Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) and North Korea sign agreements in New York on the building of two light-water nuclear reactors in the North. With the signing of the agreement under a 1994 U.S.-North Korean nuclear pact, the light-water reactor project was back on track after a three-month suspension due to a North Korean submarine incursion into South Korean waters. 1901 -- Businessman Yoo Doo-po arrives in Hawaii, becoming the first Korean on the U.S. island. 1953 -- The Changgyeong ferry sinks off Busan, leaving 229 people dead. 1969 -- The Ministry of Education decides to require male students at high schools and colleges to receive military drills as part of the country's preparedness against threats from North Korea. 1995 -- The government announces the introduction of a real-name system for real estate transactions. 2002 -- An appeals court in Seoul rules the government must compensate residents of Maehyang, Gyeonggi Province, living near a U.S. military firing range. The plaintiffs said they suffered physical injuries, hearing impairments and property damage from shooting and bombing exercises at the Kooni Range. 1933 -- A large canal network built during the time of Korea's Goguryeo Kingdom (37 B.C.-668 A.D.) is unearthed in Pyongyang. The city that later became the North Korean capital also served as the capital of the kingdom, which governed the northern part of the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China. 1988 -- North Korea's Olympic Committee declares its decision to boycott the Seoul Olympics. 2001 -- Then U.S. President Bill Clinton expresses "regret" over the killing of South Korean citizens by U.S. soldiers during the 1950-1953 Korean War. He acknowledged that U.S. soldiers "killed or injured an unconfirmed number of Korean refugees" in Nogeun-ri, a hamlet in southeastern South Korea, in July 1950, barely a month after the war broke out. Bereaved families claim at least 248 people were killed. 2006 -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visits the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Kim's visit to the high-tech city near Hong Kong was seen as an indication of North Korea's willingness to reform its economy. 2007 -- North Korea hands over a South Korean fishing boat, with its engineer aboard, that crossed into North Korean waters in December 2006 in the East Sea.
