1920 -- Korea's national sports council holds the country's first baseball championship for junior and senior high school students at Seoul's Baejae High School.


1933 -- The Korean Language Society announces the first orthography for the Korean language.


1983 -- The government of Burma, now called Myanmar, severs diplomatic ties with North Korea after a group of North Korean agents is blamed for a bombing in Rangoon on Oct. 9 that year. Seventeen South Korean officials, who were accompanying then President Chun Doo-hwan on a visit to the Southeast Asian country, were killed in the attack.


2002 -- Unionized government workers stage a nationwide walkout for the first time in South Korea's history.

1922 -- Korea's first recognized pilot, Ahn Chang-nam, succeeds in his maiden flight from Tokyo to Osaka. At the time, Korea was under Japanese colonial rule.


1990 -- Four direct telephone lines go into service linking South Korea with the former Soviet Union for the first time.


1993 -- President Kim Young-sam and Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa hold summit talks in Gyeongju, 370 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The two-day meeting dealt with the two countries' relations with North Korea, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and shared concerns over Russia's dumping of nuclear waste into the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

2004 -- A Japanese delegation arrives in North Korea for working-level talks on the communist state's abduction of Japanese nationals.


2005 -- A new round of six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear program begins in Beijing.
