1882 -- Korea's Joseon Kingdom signs a treaty of friendship and commerce with Britain.


1956 -- South Korea holds its first memorial ceremony for soldiers who died in the 1950-53 Korean War. The June 6th Memorial Day was established that year as a national holiday, as the country became stable three years after the war ended.


1999 -- Samsung Electronics develops the world's first 256-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip.

1953 -- The U.N. Command signs a treaty with the North Korean and Chinese forces to exchange prisoners captured during the 1950-53 Korean War. The parties signed an armistice in July that year.


1967 -- South Korea's 7th general elections take place. The ruling Democratic Republic Party earned a majority in the National Assembly by winning 50.6 percent of the vote.


2000 -- President Kim Dae-jung attends the funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi during his visit to Tokyo and holds summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and U.S. President Bill Clinton after the ceremony.


2006 -- France agrees to lease to South Korea a collection of Korean royal texts that was looted by French forces in 1866 from an archive of Korea's Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The texts are now being kept at France's national library in Paris, but Seoul wants them to be returned.

1953 -- South Korea's Cabinet decides not to sign the proposed Korean War armistice in a symbolic gesture to show the government's desire for unification of the Korean Peninsula. The agreement was signed on July 27 by the American-led U.N. Command on one side, and North Korea and China on the other, without the participation of South Korea.


1981 -- Harvard University establishes a research institute for Korean studies.


1983 -- Kim Young-sam, leader of the opposition New Democratic Party, ends a three-week hunger strike that he held to protest the military junta led by Chun Doo-hwan.


1987 -- Lee Han-yeol, a student activist from Yonsei University in Seoul, falls into a coma after being hit by a tear gas canister hurled by riot police during a pro-democracy street protest in Seoul. He died about a month later, triggering a series of violent anti-government street demonstrations across the country that forced the government to introduce a direct presidential election system.

1917 -- Korean independence fighters based in Hawaii, led by Park Yong-man, establish a military band named "Great Joseon People's Army."


1926 -- Residents of Seoul stage street marches against the Japanese colonial regime to coincide with the state funeral of Sunjong, the last emperor of the Joseon Dynasty.


1952 -- The United Nations Command, established to support South Korea against North Korea in the civil war that started in 1950, puts down a revolt by prisoners of war at a jail on Geoje Island off South Korea's southeastern coast.

The jail accommodated about 150,000 North Korean soldiers and 30,000 Chinese. The prisoners were set free in 1953 when the Korean War ended with an armistice.


1962 -- The government implements its second currency reform, converting the basic monetary unit to the "won" from the "hwan" and devaluating it 10 to 1.


1988 -- Pohang Iron and Steel, now POSCO, is listed on the Korea Stock Exchange.


1989 -- The Ministry of Construction announces 22 districts of a total 24 million square meters for residential development.


1993 -- North Korea test-fires a missile with a 1,000 km range in the East Sea.
