1 Temmuz 1906 -- Japon sömürgeci bir acente, Joseon Hanedanligi Dönemi'nde Kore'nin demiryollarini ele geçirir. Japonya acentenin adini "Joseon Tonggambu" olarak adlandirdi, ve merkezi Seoul’de idi. Kore, 1910’dan 1945'e kadar Japonya’nin sömürgesi durumundaydi.

1 Temmuz 1950 -- ABD'li kara askerleri Seoul’ün 450 kilometre günedogusundaki Busan Limani'na indi. Kuzey Kore'nin Güney Kore'ye saldirmasiyla Kore Savasi 25 Haziran'da aniden baslamisti. Birlesmis Milletler Güvenlik konseyi bu tarihten önce Kuzey Koreli kuvvetleri caydirmak için güneye koalisyon askerleri göndermekle ilgili bir acil durum toplantisi yapmislardi. Nihayet savas 27 Temmuz 1953'te bir ateskes anlasmasiyla bitti.

1 Temmuz 1957 -- Birlesmis Milletler Komutasi, Japonya'dan Güney Kore'ye transfer edilir. Merkezi Seoul Yongsan olarak saptanmistir.

1 Temmuz 1967 -- General Park Chung-hee, baskan olarak ikinci yeminini etmistir. Park, 1961'de basarili bir askeri harekattan sonra yükseldi ve 1963'te parlamento tarafindan resmen baskan olarak ilan edildi. Park, 1969'da anayasayi degistirdi. Park yeniden 1971'de seçildi ve 1972'de anayasada tekrar bir degisiklige gitti. 1979'da yaninda çalisan memur Kim Jae-kyu tarafindan suikasta ugradi. Baskanin ülkenin sanayilesmesi, kisi basina düsen gelirin artmasi ve ihracatlarda yükselisler gibi basarilarinin yanisira diktatör bir yanida vardi.

1 Temmuz 1995 -- Hükümet tarafindan (zamanin Baskani Kim Young-sam) emlak kayit sistemine yeni bir isim verilir.

1 Temmuz 2003 -- Seoul Belediyesi, Seoul’dan geçen akarsu Cheonggye-cheon’u korumaya yönelik çalismalara basladi. Proje 2005'te tamamlandi.

1 Temmuz 2007 -- Seoul'de ABD Kore Kuvvetleri (USFK) merkezinin kurulusunun 50. yildönümüdür. USFK 1 Temmuz'da Tokyo'da Birlesmis Milletler adi altinda Güney Kore baskentinde savasti. USFK, 1950-53 yillari arasinda yapilan Kore Savasi’ndan sonra kuruldu. Birlesik Devletler ve diger 15 ulus Kuzey Kore ve Çin’e karsi Birlesmis Milletler çatisi altinda Güney Kore ile yan yana savasmisti.

1949 -- Kim Koo, one of the nation's most revered patriots, is assassinated by an ultra-right-wing military officer. Seeing the nation sharply divided between the right and the left soon after the 1945 independence from Japanese colonial rule, Kim made his utmost efforts to mediate and promote a unified Korea. However, Korea, divided into separate states the previous year, was going through tumultuous conflicts between pro-U.S. capitalists and communists supported by the Soviet Union.

A majority of students and progressive scholars supported Kim, but he also faced fierce opposition from right-wing politicians and businessmen. Kim, who was a key leader of the provisional Korean government-in-exile in China under Japanese colonial rule, played a pivotal role in the country's independence movement.


1950 -- The U.N. Security Council holds an emergency meeting and passes a resolution to dispatch troops to South Korea to fight invading North Korean forces. The Korean War had started the previous day, causing many people to flee southward.

The North Koreans easily advanced south at the beginning of the conflict, but the U.N. forces pushed them back to the border with China, where large numbers of Chinese troops intervened to help North Korea.

The fighting ended with a cease-fire, not a peace treaty, on July 27, 1953, so the Koreas are still technically at war.


1974 -- South Korea and the United States sign an agreement to cooperate on civil uses of atomic energy.


2008 -- North Korea hands over a list detailing its plutonium activity to China, following the aid-for-denuclearization deal signed in 2007.

1882 -- Joseon signs treaty of commerce with Germany.


1983 -- State-run television station KBS broadcasts its first live program to help people find their family members separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

The emotional show, initially planned as a one-off program, was extended until January the following year due to overwhelming demand and helped 10,189 people meet long-lost relatives. More than 10 million people were separated during the war.


1989 -- South Korean student activist Lim Soo-kyong arrives in Pyongyang to participate in the World Festival of Youth and Students, a socialist youth congress, as a representative of South Korean university students. Lim received a tremendous welcome in North Korea but stirred a controversy in the South.

She was sentenced to three and half years in prison for the unauthorized visit.


2007 -- South Korea signs a free trade agreement with the United States. For South Korea, it is a pact with its second-biggest export market. For the U.S., it is the first FTA with an Asian country and the largest since the North American FTA (NAFTA) of 1994. The deal has yet to be ratified by the legislators of the two countries.
