16 Subat 1942 --
Kuzey Kore lideri Kim Jong-il dogmustur. Kim Jong-il, ülkenin kurucusu olan babasi Kim Il-sung'un 1994'de ölmesinin ardindan yönetimi ele almistir.

16 Subat 1945 -- Sair Yoon Dong-ju 29 yasindayken Japonya'da bir hapishanede ölmüstür. Çin'in kuzeydogusunda yer alan Manchuria'da dogmus ve Japonya'ya tasinmadan evvel ileri egitimi için Pyongyang ve Seoul'de okumustur. Japon polisi onu, hükümet karsiti bir politika izledigi gerekçesiyle "düsünce suçlusu" olarak tutuklamistir. Fukuoka hapishanesinde iki yil hapis yatmistir. Yoon, siddetli muamele gördügü için ölmüs ve memleketi Mançuya'daki bir kilise mezarligina gömülmüstür. Japonya'nin Kore üzerindeki sömürge döneminin karanlik yüzünde bir genç adamin uyanik kalmak için verdigi mücadele ile ilgili pek çok dokunakli siir yazmistir. Bu siirler yazarin ölümünden sonra, 1948'de Seoul'da basilan "Gökyüzü, Rüzgar, Yildiz ve Siirler" adli siir kitabinda yer almaktadir.

16 Subat 1950 -- Güney Kore'nin ilk devlet baskani Rhee Syng-man, Amerikali General Douglas MacArthur'dan gelen bir celp sebebiyle Japonyayi ziyaret etmistir.

16 Subat 1958 -- Busan'dan Seoul'e gitmekte olan Güney Kore uçagi Kuzey Kore'ye kaçirilmistir.

February 16, 1942 --
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is born. He took power after his father Kim Il-sung, founder of the communist country, died in 1994.

February 16, 1945 -- Poet Yoon Dong-ju dies in a prison in Japan at the age of 29. Born in Manchuria, northeastern China, he studied in Pyongyang and Seoul before moving to Japan for further education. Japanese police arrested him as a "thought criminal" pursuing an anti-government drive. Serving his two-year jail term in a Fukuoka prison, Yoon died from harsh treatment and was buried at a churchyard in his home, Manchuria. He wrote many touching poems mirroring a young man's struggle to keep awake in the dark times of Japanese colonization over Korea, which was posthumously published in Seoul 1948 in the poetry book, "Sky, Wind, Star and Poems."

February 16, 1950 -- South Korea's first President, Rhee Syng-man, visits Japan on an invitation from U.S. General Douglas MacArthur.

February 16, 1958 -- A South Korean airplane heading from Busan to Seoul is hijacked to North Korea.

February 16, 2004 -- South Korea's National Assembly ratifies the South Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement.

17 Subat 1962 --
Hükümet, Japon sömürge döneminin etkileri ve Kore Savasi ile sendeleyen ülke ekonomisi için 5 yillik kalkinma planini tamamlamistir. Ekonomik kalkinma 1982'ye dek dört dönem halindeki 5 yillik kalkinma planlari ile gerçeklestirilmistir.

1982'de ülke ekonomisinin yanisira yasam standartlarinin kalitesini de iyilestirme görüsü ile projenin adi degistirilerek "ekonomik ve sosyal gelisim plâni" adini almistir. Hükümet projesi 1996'da bitmistir.

17 Subat 1988 -- Antartika'daki Kral George Adasi'nda Kral Sejong Istasyonu kurulmustur. Sejong üssüne bu istasyonu 20 Güney Koreli arastirmaci ve personeli kurmustur.

The government finalizes its five-year economic development plan for the nation's economy, still reeling from the effects of Japanese colonization and the Korean War. Economic revitalization was carried out through four five-year plans over 20 years until 1982, eventually achieving South Korea's globally-touted economic miracle.

In 1982, the project was renamed the "economic and social development plan" with a vision to improve the quality of individual lives as well as the nation's economy. The state project ended in 1996.

Geometrik hesaplamalarina dayanarak, baskentin kuzeye dogru tasinmasini istemistir. Myocheong'un radikal reform hareketleri, isyan esnasinda onu öldüren yüksek düzey memurlar ve aristokratlar tarafindan engellenmistir.

19 Subat 1981 -- Devlete ait Kore Elektrik Gücü Sirketi, Yeonggwang'da 7. ve 8. atom enerji santralinin insaatina baslamistir.

19 Subat 1992 -- Kuzey ve Güney Kore, Kuzey'in baskenti Pyongyang'da üst düzey görüsmelerde uzlasmaya vararak Kuzey-Güney Çerçeve Anlasmasi'ni yürürlüge koymustur.

19 Subat 1999 -– Seoul Üniversitesi Profesörü Hwang Woo-suk tarafindan yürütülen bir veterinerlik arastirma takimi ülkede ilk defa olarak bir inegi klonlamayi basarmistir. Hwang, 2004'te klonlanmis insan embriyolarindan kök hücreleri çikardigini ve 2005'te özel kök hücreleri gelistirdigini iddia etti.

February 19, 1136 -- An uprising led by Myocheong, a buddhist monk and royal adviser during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), is put down by the king's army. Myocheong, who supported an independent policy toward China and opposed conservative officials, suggested war against the Chinese kingdom and wanted to relocate the capital northward based on his geomantic studies. His radical reform moves were blocked by high-level officials and aristocrats, who had him killed during the revolt.

February 19 , 1981 -- The state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation commences construction on the 7th and 8th atomic power plants in Yeonggwang, a southwestern maritime region of the country.

February 19, 1992 -- South and North Korea put into effect the South-North Basic Agreement on reconciliation and non-aggression produced at high-level meetings in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

February 19, 1999 -- A veterinary research team led by Hwang Woo-suk, professor of Seoul National University, succeeds in cloning a cow for the first time in the country. Hwang claimed to have extracted stem cells from cloned human embryos in 2004 and developed patient-specific stem cells in 2005. In 2006, however, the scientist was found to have fabricated data in his landmark papers, thus discrediting many of his purported achievements.

Bir grup Kore bagimsizlik eylemcisi tarafindan kurulan okul, 1910'dan 1945'e kadar Japon sömürge rejimine karsi savasan pilot yetistirmistir.

20 Subat 1963 -- Ülkenin ilk ROTC (Yedek Subay Yetistirme Teskilati) sinifindan mezun olan ögrenciler tegmen olarak görevlendirilmistir. Sinif 1,769 ögrenciden olusmaktaydi.

20 Subat 1965 -- Kore Cumhuriyeti ve Japonya arasinda diplomatik iliskileri baslatacak olan temel pakt imzalanmistir. Pakt ayni zamanda Kore, Japonya'nin sömürgesi oldugu yil olan 1910'dan önce yapilan bütün anlasmalari geçersiz kilmistir. Bazi Koreliler, sömürge döneminde yaptiklarinin özrünü kapsamadigi için pakta karsi çikmistir.

20 Subat 1996 –- Güney Kore ve Japonya, 200 deniz millik Münhasir Ekonomik Bölge'yi uygulamak üzere bir anlasma yaptiklarini duyurmustur.

February 20, 1920 --
The Korean Aviation School opens in Willows, California. Established by a group of Korean independence activists, the school produced pilots who fought against the Japanese colonial regime that ruled the country from 1910 to 1945.

February 20, 1963 -- Students from the nation's first ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) class are commissioned as second lieutenants. The class consisted of 1,769 students.

February 20, 1965 -- The Treaty on Basic Relations Between the Republic of Korea and Japan is initialed, establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. The pact also nullified all agreements made before 1910, when Korea became a Japanese colony. Many Koreans opposed the pact because it did not contain an apology from Japan for its colonial occupation.

February 20, 1996 -- South Korea and Japan announce an agreement to introduce a 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone, a fishing quota in each other's EEZs and a restriction on the number of vessels allowed to operate in those areas.

February 20, 2002 -- South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and his American counterpart George W. Bush visit Dorasan Station, the northernmost train stop in the country, located near the border with North Korea. The visit, intended to show the two nation's strong alliance and urge the North to move toward reform and openness, took place right after talks between the two leaders.

February 20, 2003 -- A North Korean fighter enters South Korean airspace over the West Sea. The jet retreated a few minutes later after being intercepted by southern fighters. A transport plane from the North briefly entered southern airspace two decades earlier in 1983.

February 20, 2005 -- The South Korea Foreign Ministry calls in China's ambassador to express regret over Beijing's repatriation to North Korea of a former South Korean solider taken prisoner during the 1950-53 Korean War.

February 20, 2006 -- Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung decides to postpone his planned trip to North Korea until after local elections in late May, apparently as a result of claims from the main opposition party that he is trying to influence the elections.

February 20, 2009 -- Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, South Korea's first Roman Catholic cardinal and a tireless champion of democracy and human rights under oppressive military dictatorships, is buried at a Catholic graveyard.
