Hyeonchung-il ( 현충일 ) / Memorial Day

Güney Kore Anma Günü, Kore Savaşı’nda ya da diğer önemli savaşlarda hayatını kaybeden erkekleri ve kadınları anmak için her yıl 6 Haziran’da gerçekleştirilmektedir.

1956 yılından bugüne kadar anma töreni, Seoul Ulusal Mezarlığı’nda düzenlenmektedir. Anma Günü, sabah saat 10’da tüm ülkede sirenler çalar ve halk 10 dakika boyunca sessizce dua eder. Ayrıca, Güney Kore’de tüm bayraklar yarıya çekilir.

Kore Bağımsızlık Hareketi ve savaş tecrübeleri, Koreliler’in geçirmiş oldukları can kayıplarını anmak için resmi tatil olarak Anma Günü’nün başlangıcına işaret etmektedir. Anma gününde, bu trajedinin ve savaş sırasında hayatını kaybeden kadınları ve erkekleri hatırlatmak amacıyla bayraklar yarıya çekilmektedir.

“Koreliler, 2. Dünya Savaşı’nda bile çok fazla kayıp verdiklerini ve hala daha savaşın Amerika Birleşik Devletleri gibi ülkelerin arasında devam ettiğini düşünüyorlar. Onlar, bunu “soğuk savaş” olarak adlandırıyorlar.”

Bu yüzden Anma Günü törenleri, ölen askerleri anmaktan çok daha fazlasıdır; dünyanın her tarafında halen daha çatışma yaşayan insanlarla da ilgilidir.

Tarihi Kore Savaşı, Kuzey Kore’nin Seoul’e saldırması ve yedi binin üzerinde insanın öldürülmesi ile damga vurmuştur. Kore Savaşı sırasında hayatta kalanlar, istemeyerek de olsa bunu yapmak zorunda kalmışlardır. Bu saldırıyı hatırlatmak amacıyla, Anma Günü töreni Seoul’de gerçekleştirilmektedir.

1994 yılında, Anma Günü töreninin bir göstergesi olarak Seoul’de Savaş Müzesi açılmıştır. Müzede, savaş sırasında meydana gelen olaylar ve onüç bin savaş malzemesinin bulunduğu sergilerden oluşan altı oda yer almaktadır. Müze, askeri üssün karargah merkezinde yer almaktadır ve iki üst kat ile iki alt kata sahiptir.

Hyeonchung-il ( 현충일 ) / Memorial Day

The South Korean Memorial Day is held every June 6 to commemorate the men and women who died while in military service during the Korean War and other significant wars or battles.

On this day, a memorial ceremony is held in the National Cemetery in Seoul, starting from 1956. At 10 A.M. on Memorial Day, a siren rings all over the country, and people have silent prayers for 10 minutes. Also, the South Korean flag is flown at half-staff.

The Independence movement of Korea and experiences of the war mark the beginning of Memorial Day as a public holiday to commemorate the loss of lives that Koreans underwent. On Memorial Day, the Korean flag is flown at half staff as a reminder of the tragedy and death of both men and women who died while they served in the military.

The emotional and physical scars left behind tell the tale of sadness as South Koreans try to give credence to those who suffered and died for their country. The President of Korea usually speaks during the lavish ceremony that commemorates the occasion:

"The Koreans think that they suffered more losses than even the losses suffered in World War II and also think that the war is still ongoing because of the conflict between countries like the United States. They call this “the cold war.”

So the Memorial Day celebration is more than about the dying soldiers, but those who are still living in the conflict of the world.

The historical Korean War marked the attack on Seoul by North Korea and the killing of over seven thousand people. The survivors served unwillingly in the Korean War because they were forced to do so. This is why the Memorial Day celebration is held in Seoul as a reminder of that attack.

In 1994, the Korean government opened up a War Museum in Seoul as an indication of the Memorial Day celebration. It has about six rooms with exhibitions of what took place during the war and about thirteen thousand war items displayed. The museum is located on the headquarters of the army base and has two upper floors and two lower floors.
