An alternative to the traditional flea market is the Hongdae "Free Market," where patrons have the option of purchasing hand-crafted artwork from the vendors. The theme for this weekly market is “art for the environment,” and many accessories are made from recycled material by eco-conscious artists. A coalition of creativity flourishes here, with many vendors producing on-the-spot art. Vendors sell everything from handmade jewelry, bookmarks and stamps to hand-stitched kurek-kurek dolls, from hats to hand-painted notebooks, T-shirts and flip lighters. Ji-young and her friend Dario, from Spain, displayed handmade jewelry with precious stones and seeds that they discovered while traveling through South America.

Getting there:
Hongdae Station, Line 2, Exit 5. Walk straight to the main shopping street, turn right and go straight. When you see the Starbucks at the intersection, turn left. Walk straight to the next intersection and turn left. You will see the market in a playground across from the Hongik University entrance.
