>> Güney Kore ve Amerika Birlesik Devletleri, 17 Nisan 2012 tarihi itibariyle savas zamaninda harekat kontrolünün Washington'dan Seoul'e geçecegini duyurdu. Amerikan askerlerinin Güney Kore ile birlikte Kuzey Kore'nin istilasina karsi savastigi zaman olan 1950-1953 Kore Savasi'na kadar dayanan bir askeri ittifakin yeniden tanimlanarak devam etmesiyle her iki taraf için de en tartismali konulardan birisi anlasmayla çözümlenmis oldu.
>> South Korea and the United States announce that Seoul will reclaim wartime operational control of its forces from Washington as of April 17, 2012. The agreement resolved one of the most controversial bilateral issues as the two countries continue to redefine a military alliance that dates back to the 1950-1953 Korean War, when American soldiers fought with South Korea against North Korea's invasion.

Chun'un selefi Park Chung-hee'ye istihbarat sefi suikast düzenlemisti. Chun 1981 yilindan 1988 yilina kadar Güney Kore'yi yönetti.
>> Chun Doo-hwan, a former Army general who staged a military coup in December 1979, is elected as South Korea's 12th president by the electoral college he hand-picked. Chun's predecessor, Park Chung-hee, was assassinated by his intelligence chief. Chun ruled South Korea from 1981 to 1988.

>> Roh Tae-woo 13. devlet baskani olarak göreve basladi. Chun Doo-hwan'in yerine geçen Roh, Park Chung-hee'nin istihbarat sefi Kim Kae-kyu tarafindan öldürülmesinin ardindan eski askeri meslektasinin yürüttügü darbe ortamina yardim etmisti.
>> Roh Tae-woo is inaugurated as the 13th president. Roh replaced Chun Doo-hwan, a former military colleague whom he helped stage a military coup after then President Park Chung-hee was assassinated by his top intelligence official, Kim Jae-kyu.

>> Bagimsizlik savasçisi ve politikaci Kim Koo, Birlesmis Milletler'in Kore'nin güneyinde ayri bir genel seçime ev sahipligi yapma önerisine açikça karsi çikti. Kim, seçimin Kore Yarimadasi'nin bölünmesine zemin hazirlayacagini ve komünist hakimiyetindeki Kuzey Kore ile BM denetimindeki Güney Kore'nin ortak bir hükümet kurmasi gerektigini söyledi.
>> Kim Koo, an independence fighter and politician, publicly opposes the U.N.'s proposal to hold a separate general election in southern Korea. Kim said the election would lead to the division of the Korean Peninsula, and that communist-controlled northern Korea and U.N.-supervised southern Korea should set up a common government.

>> Güney Kore, Gangwon Eyaleti'nde Pyeonghwa Baraji'nin insaatina basladi. Daha sonra insaat bakani olan Lee Kyu-hyo öncülügündeki hükümet yetkilileri Güney'i sel baskinlarina maruz birakacak miktarda su tutan Kuzey Kore'nin Geumgang Baraji'na karsilik Güney Kore'nin bu baraja gereklilik duydugunu söyledi. Güney Koreliler barajin insaasi için 73.3 milyar won (62 milyon ABD $) bagis yaptilar.
>> South Korea starts building the Pyeonghwa Dam in Gangwon Province. Government officials led by then construction minister Lee Kyu-hyo said South Korea needed the dam to counter North Korea's Geumgang Dam, which held enough water to flood the South. South Koreans donated 73.3 billion won (US$62 million) to build the dam.
