>> A Japanese ship on its way to Korea's southern port of Busan from Japan, carrying 3,725 Koreans, explodes. The Ukishima-Maru was returning Koreans who had been forced to leave home and work in Japan during the 1910-45 colonial era. The incident happened a little more than a week after Japan announced it would give up any rights to Korea following its defeat in World War II.

More than 500 people died in the explosion, which survivors said was caused by a bomb. A statement from the Japanese government claimed the ship sank when it accidentally hit a mine. South and North Korean civic groups demand that the Japanese government take responsibility for the incident, saying it was premeditated.

Sohn participated in the Berlin Olympics as a Japanese athlete, as Korea was then a colony of the island nation. The Japanese regime suspended the newspaper, but later allowed it to publish again after it fired the pertinent journalist and ran an apology.

Yargitay Nisan 1997'de Chun'in cezasini ömür boyu hapse ve Roh'un cezasini 17 yil hapse çevirdi. Aralik 1997'de her ikisi de özel aftan serbest birakildi.
>> Two former South Korean presidents, Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, are sentenced to death, and 22 years and six months in jail, respectively, for rebellion and other charges. In April 1997, the charges were commuted to life imprisonment for Chun and 17 years in jail for Roh by the Supreme Court. In December 1997, the two were released on a special pardon.
