Mindeung Village / Seosaeng Orchid

1990’nın ortalarında, Mindung batı orkideleri yetiştirmeye başlamıştı. Dugu-dong’da batı orkideleri için seralardan sonra, Busan Şehri ve diğer bölgeler yıkıldı, çiftçiler orkideler için uygun bir arazi aradılar. Orkide çiftçiliği için mükemmel havasından ve diğer koşullarından yararlanmak için Mindung’u buldular bundan dolayı bu köye taşındılar.

1995’de, Chang-gyu Lee Deokgye, Yangsan şehrine taşındıktan sonra Shinam-ri’de Seosaeng NongHyup’un arkasındaki 300-pyongluk tarlada batı orkide üretimine başladı. 1995’de, 8 batı orkidesi yetiştiricisi aile 'Seosaeng Uttum Orkide Tarımsal Birliğini’ kurdu ve üretim ve dağıtım sistemi organizatörlüğünü yaptı. Şimdilerde, 13 aile batı orkidesi yetiştirmekte ve onları BM’ye ve Çin’e ithal etmektedir.

In the mid-1990s, Mindung began cultivating western orchids. After greenhouses for western orchids in Dugu-dong, Busan city and other regions were demolished, farmers searched for a proper area for orchid farming. They found Mindung to have excellent weather and other conditions for orchid farming so they moved into the village.

In 1995, Chang-gyu Lee first began to cultivate western orchids in a 300-pyong field at the rear of Seosaeng NongHyup at Shinam-ri after moving from Deokgye, Yangsan city. In 1995, 8 western orchid households founded the 'Seosaeng Uttum Orchid Agricultural Association' and organized a production and distribution system. Currently, 13 households cultivate western orchids and export them to the U.S. and China.

Farming of western orchids has proven to be successful despite its short history. The climate of the village is the key contributor. Western orchids are very sensitive to climate conditions. Summer and winter temperatures should not fluctuate very much. In the winter the village is warmer than other regions and in the summer it is cooler, so heating and cooling costs are lower. The annual average temperature is 1-~2 oC higher than Busan, and 3~4 oC higher than other regions. The village also has sea breezes that are very good for orchid farming. The air is fresh and clean because there are no factories. Moreover, the orchid pedals can bask in sunrays for long periods because the surrounding mountains are low. The intensity of the light is high enough to bloom orchid flowers in clear colors.

Other western orchids cultivated in the village include Dentarae, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, and large-leafed and small-leafed orchids. 1.5 million orchids are produced annually in about 13,000-pyong of greenhouses in Mindung and neighboring regions. Of them, about 80% are sold in Busan and Seoul, 10% to other areas in Korea and 10% are exported to China, Japan, and the U.S.

The quality of Mindung orchids is well known in many countries. In Guandong and Shandong provinces in China, a 2,150-pyong farm was developed as an export promotion base where 210,000 orchids are cultivated and sold annually. It takes 15 months to fully grow orchids. Orchids are first raised in Mindung for 10 months and then sent to the farm in China for another 5 to 6 months of cultivation. Full-grown orchids are strongly competitive in price and quality in comparison with those cultivated completely in China.
