1952 -- South Korea joins the International Civil Aviation Organization.
1969 -- A Korean Air passenger flight from the eastern city of Gangneung to Seoul with 51 people aboard is hijacked by North Koreans and forced to land in Pyongyang. North Korea repatriated 39 of the hijacked people two months later.
1990 -- South and North Korea hold their third high-level talks in Seoul.
1995 -- South Korean mountaineer Huh Young-ho reaches the summit of Vinson Massif, the highest mountain in Antarctica.
2007 -- The two Koreas launch a regular cross-border train service for the first time since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

1995 -- The Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization, an international consortium overseeing the provision and construction of light-water nuclear reactors in North Korea, agrees to supply the communist nation with a reactor.

1926 -- Independence fighter Kim Koo is inaugurated as chief marshal of the Korean Provisional Government, which was set up in Shanghai, China, during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula from 1910-1945.
1950 -- The United Nations approves a resolution for the establishment of a U.N. committee to work toward signing an armistice to bring a ceasefire to the Korean War.
2002 -- Candlelight vigils are held in over 70 cities in 12 countries, including South Korea and the United States, in memory of two South Korean schoolgirls who were killed in an accident involving an armored U.S. military vehicle.

1947 -- North Korea implements its first currency reforms in an effort to strengthen its communist economic system, separate from that of the Soviet Union, and to prevent inflow of South Korean currency.
The country had used four kinds of bills issued by the Soviet military command since it regained its sovereignty from Japan in 1945. North Korea has conducted four currency modifications, most recently in 1992, when a picture of the house where nation's founder Kim Il-sung was born and various natural scenes were added to the back of new bills.
1977 -- The National Assembly passes a bill confirming the country's territorial sea border that stretches 12 nautical miles.
1982 -- The government allows Kim Dae-jung, then an opposition leader who was sentenced to death on sedition charges, to travel to the United States for medical treatment. Kim was transported from prison to a hospital in Seoul.
1987 -- Roh Tae-woo, a candidate of the ruling Democratic Justice Party, wins the 13th presidential election.
1994 -- The Assembly ratifies a bill on South Korea's bid to accede to the World Trade Organization.
1996 -- A high court sentences former presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo to life imprisonment and 17 years in prison, respectively, for their role in a 1979 coup that installed Chun in power in 1980. Chun served as president until February 1988 before being succeeded by Roh, who served in office for five years. The two former generals were later released following a special presidential pardon.
1997 -- South Korea removes the daily fluctuation band of dollar-won transactions, paving the way for further liberalization of foreign exchange deals.

1963 -- Park Chung-hee, a former Army general who took power through a coup in 1961, is sworn in as South Korea's fifth president.
1981 -- The government designates an expanse of coastal area in South Jeolla Province as a national park.
1998 -- Chung Ju-yung, honorary chairman of Hyundai Group, returns to South Korea after a historic visit to North Korea where he and Pyongyang officials agreed to jointly build an industrial complex in a North Korean city. North Korea later committed 66 million square meters of land in Kaesong, just a few kilometers north of the inter-Korean border, for the complex.
2002 -- Red Cross officials of South and North Korea agree to set up a joint panel on the construction of a reunion center for separated families at Mount Kumgang in North Korea and to hold a sixth round of reunions.
2003 -- South Korea finalizes a plan to send an additional 3,000 troops to Iraq on a rehabilitation mission at the request of the United States.
