1959 -- Cho Bong-am, leader of the "Jinbo" (Progress) Party, is executed after being convicted of violating the anti-communist National Security Law by conducting pro-communist activities. While Korea was under Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), Cho was an independence activist who served one year in prison for participating in the March 1st Independent Movement in 1919. After the release, he studied politics in Japan for one year and came back to Korea with a belief that socialism could enable Koreans to regain their sovereignty. Cho joined communist organizations in Korea and served in key posts. He also traveled to the Soviet Union and China to attend meetings there and organize activities. In China, however, he was arrested again by the Japanese police and served seven years in prison. He was released when Korea regained its sovereignty in 1945. Amid the ideological rift that developed in the country shortly after independence, Cho left the communist party and turned slightly right. In 1948, he was appointed agricultural minister and served two terms as a lawmaker. He ran for the presidency in 1956 against Rhee Syngman, but was defeated. Some people have claimed Cho was brought to trial as a result of a plot by Rhee, his political rival, but no proof of such a plot has ever been found. 1995 -- Park Yong-gil, the wife of pro-unification activist Rev. Moon Ik-hwan, is arrested when she crosses the border at the truce village of Panmunjom after making an unauthorized visit to North Korea. 2000 -- Alpinist Um Hong-gil completes scaling all 14 peaks of the Himalayas, which stand more than 8,000 meters above sea level. He was the first South Korean to achieve the feat. 2002 -- South and North Korea end a Cabinet-level meeting in Seoul after issuing a six-point agreement that called for, among other things, the re-linking of a cross-border railway, the Kyeongui Line. 1943 -- Japan begins conscripting Koreans into the military during its colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. Japan's leaders had long hesitated to implement a conscription system in Korea after the annexation of the country in 1910 due of fears that Koreans, once armed as part of the Japanese military, could revolt at any time. But with an expanding war in China and the start of the Pacific War, Japan had no choice but to introduce the system as it needed to secure sufficient manpower. 1972 -- At least 25 people are killed when a bus falls off a cliff in Gangwon Province, northern South Korea. 1976 -- Kimpo International Airport opens. The facility served as the country's biggest gateway until Incheon International Airport opened in 2001. 1983 -- South Korea and 24 countries agree to full automation of international calls. 2000 -- A new medical system takes effect in South Korea with the aim of preventing drug abuse by drawing a clear line between the roles of doctors and pharmacists. The measure prohibits doctors from selling medicine and pharmacists from writing prescriptions. 2008 -- The government disapproves a request by disgraced cloning expert Hwang Woo-suk to resume his work on human stem cell research.
