1986 -- The South Korean government announces plans to build a "Peace Dam" on the upper stretches of the Han River that flows through Seoul to counter a possible North Korean "flood" offensive. The move was prompted by reports that North Korea planned to build a "Mount Kumgang" dam upstream, north of the border. The then military-backed government claimed that the North's dam was intended as a weapon to flood the densely populated capital and its surrounding areas. The South Korean dam, completed several years later, was left empty in order to contain floods that might be released by the North. 1995 -- The government of President Kim Young-sam re-opens an investigation into the so-called Dec. 12 incident, in which Chun Doo-hwan, then an army general, staged an internal coup and seized power in 1979. It also decided to reinvestigate the May 18 civil uprising, in which citizens in the southern city of Gwangju rose up against Chun's government in 1980. The uprising was put down by force, resulting in hundreds of deaths. 2004 -- The International Atomic Energy Agency's governing board decides not to refer South Korea to the U.N. Security Council over its undeclared experiments with nuclear material, but adopts a "chairman's statement" to express concern over Seoul's failure to report them. South Korea acknowledged in September that its scientists secretly extracted and enriched plutonium and uranium, two key ingredients for nuclear weapons, in 1982 and 2000. 1598 -- A seven-year invasion of Korea by Japanese forces led by warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi ends. The invasion seriously weakened Korea's Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). 1953 -- President Syngman Rhee holds a summit with his Taiwanese counterpart Chiang Kaishek. 1964 -- South Korea signs a friendship treaty with Taiwan. 2002 -- On behalf of U.S. President George W. Bush, then-U.S. Ambassador to Korea Thomas Hubbard apologizes for the accidental deaths of two South Korean schoolgirls in a road accident involving a U.S. military vehicle. 2006 -- The presidential office retracts its nomination of Jeon Hyo-sook to become the country's first female chief of the Constitutional Court. In a breach of the Constitution, Cheong Wa Dae had Jeon resign as a justice of the court so she could serve a full six-year term as head of the court. 1980 -- Local television and radio stations TBC and DBS air their last programs in the wake of the Chun Doo-hwan government's forcible merger and closure of media outlets nationwide. Chun, a general who seized power through a coup in 1979, gagged the press to prolong his regime. 1991 -- Moon Sun-myung, founder of the Unification Church, and Park Bo-hi, head of the church-affiliated Segye Times, visit Pyongyang to meet then-North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. Kim died of heart failure three years later and his son Kim Jong-il inherited power. 2000 -- Two hundred separated families from South and North Korea hold tearful reunions in Seoul and Pyongyang for the first time since the 1950-53 Korean War. The reunions were one of the crowning achievements from the landmark summit talks between the leaders of the two Koreas earlier in the year.
