1906 -- Korea's first recognized modern drama, "Eunsegye" (Snow World), is staged at the Wongaksa Theatre. 1950 -- The government promulgates a decree to prosecute South Koreans helping North Korean communists during the Korean War, which continued until 1953. 1961 -- Maj. Gen. Park Chung-hee travels to the United States after taking power through a military coup on May 16, 1961. 1995 -- The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, the more militant of South Korea's two umbrella labor bodies, is launched. 2000 -- Representatives of doctors, pharmacists and the government reach an agreement on revising the Pharmacy Law to implement medical reforms aimed at separating the roles of doctors and pharmacists. Previously, Korean pharmacists served as quasi-doctors, diagnosing and dispensing medication upon request. Doctors similarly prescribed and sold medication. The revised law denied doctors the right to sell medication and required pharmacists to follow a doctor's prescription before selling drugs above a certain strength. 2003 --[/b] Thousands of supporters of President Roh Moo-hyun launch the Uri Party, emphasizing clean politics and reconciliation with North Korea. Roh had run for the presidency on the then-ruling Millennium Democratic Party ticket the previous year, but left the party in September 2003, citing its waning enthusiasm for reform. 1961 -- Park Chung-hee, chairman of the Supreme Council of National Reconstruction, stops in Tokyo on his way back from the U.S. and agrees with leaders there to normalize relations between South Korea and Japan. 1992 -- Ground is broken for Incheon International Airport on Yeongjong island, just off the port city of Incheon, 40km west of Seoul. 1946 -- Forty-one people are killed and 67 others are injured in a train crash at Yeongdeungpo Station in Seoul. 1970 -- Jeon Tae-il, 22, a garment worker at Seoul's Pyeonghwa Market, commits suicide by self-immolation in protest for better pay and working conditions. His death sparked protests by labor activists in South Korea which was then ruled by authoritarian President Park Chung-hee. 1995 -- Jiang Zemin, then president of the People's Republic of China, begins a five-day state visit to South Korea at the invitation of then South Korean President Kim Young-sam. 2008 -- The Constitutional Court rules that a law levying heavier taxes on high-end home owners is partly unconstitutional. 1917 -- Park Chung-hee is born to a farming family in Gumi, North Gyeongsang province. In 1961, Park, then an army major general, staged a coup and became president. He remained in power until he was assassinated 18 years later by his intelligence chief. 1980 -- Under an order from South Korea's military junta led by Gen. Chun Doo-hwan, who seized power in a military coup a year earlier, the nation's electronic and print media are forced to realign and consolidate themselves through mergers, drastically reducing the number of media organizations in the country. 1984 -- The Dongjak Bridge, the 11th bridge built over the Han River which divides the northern and southern parts of Seoul, opens to traffic. 1994 -- Hyundai Motor Co. develops the nation's first solar-powered car using indigenous technology. 2006 -- Construction Minister Chu Byung-jik and two senior presidential secretaries resign, holding themselves responsible for the failure of the Roh Moo-hyun government's real estate policy. 1988 -- North Korea proposes deputy-premier-level political and military talks with South Korea. 1988 -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest chipmaker, develops 1MS RAM (random access memory) for the second time in the world. 1995 -- Former President Roh Tae-woo is detained on corruption charges over his role in a 1979 military coup and in the 1980 massacre of pro-democracy protestors in Gwangju, 329 kilometers south of Seoul. Roh, who became president via the 1988 election that followed democratic reforms, was convicted in 1996 and pardoned in 1997 after a decision by then President Kim Young-sam and then President-elect Kim Dae-jung.
