English
Gumul of Gojoseon

Gumul of Gojoseon (Hangul: 구물; Hanja: 丘勿) was the 44th Dangun of Gojoseon, and the founder of "Great Buyeo", a continuation of Gojoseon as a different dynasty.

Background
Gumul was born into an aristocratic family of Gojoseon and served as governor of Baek-Min fortress. Gumul is specifically mentioned to have been a noble.

Rise to Power
In the year 426 BCE, during the 36th year of the reign of the Mulli of Gojoseon, the Hunter-General Wu Hwa-Chung led an uprising with an army of 20 thousand that resulted in the loss of 36 provinces and eventually the capital city itself. Mulli Dangun was forced to flee, and died not long after. Before he died, however, he gave orders to Gumul, the governor and protector of Baek-Min Fortress, to pacify and crush the rebellion. Gumul led an army of ten thousand, as well as reinforcement from 18 fortresses, and restored all of the lost 36 provinces and the capital city, defeating Wu Hwa-Chung, and crushing the rebellion. With the throne empty, the Ohga (the Five Central Nobles) and all of the military recognized Gumul as the next Dangun of Gojoseon.

Founder of Great Buyeo
Upon rising to the throne in 425 BCE, Gumul changed the state name to "Great Buyeo" and the Samhan were renamed to be Samjoseon. Gumul ruled for 29 years, and during these years, Gumul restored peace and order, as well as construct a new law code. He called the capital "Pyeongyang" and was succeeded by his son Yeuru of Gojoseon.
