Güney Kore'nin ilk modern manhwa sanatçısı Do Yeong Lee
Do Yeong Lee (1933 1884), 1909'da popüler günlük bir gazetede manhwanın bir formunu halkla paylaşmıştır. Lee, Kore'nin ilk manhwa sanatçısı olarak bilinir ve çizimlerindeki ana tema, Kore'nin Japonya tarafından sömürgeleştirilmesine karşı çıkmaktı.
Kore Kültür Müzesi, 1933 yılında ölen Yeong Lee için bir sergi yapmıştır. Müze de sanatçının 90 eseri sergilenmişti. (Sergi 2004 yılında yapılmıştı.)
'Saphwa' adını verdiği çizimleri hicivli ve öğretici çizgi romanlarında Kore insanlarını resmetti. Çalışmaları Haziran 1909'da Daehanminbo'da yer aldı. Bir yıl sonra bu gazete, Japon sömürgeciler tarafından kapatıldı. Lee, daha sonra kaligrafi ve resim birliği kurdu.

Do Yeong Lee (1884 ~ 1933) was introducing his ideas into a form of manhwa through the popular daily newspaper on 1909. He is considered to be the first manhwa artist and the concept of his drawing was to against Japan's colonization in Korea.
Korea culture museum praises Do Yeong Lee who died at year of 1933. The museum will be exhibiting 90 episodes of his works which was never really studied.
The exhibit opened March 30th 2004.
Lee Do-yeong can be considered the first modern Korean illustrator. He tried to capture the negative spirit of the Korean people in his satirical and didactic comics and illustrations under the title 'Saphwa'. His work appeared in the Daehanminbo daily from 2 June 1909. A year later, the magazine was forbidden by the Japanese colonists. He then founded an association for calligraphy and painting, of which he assumed the direction from the 1920s.
